Narwhal's School of Awesomeness
by Ben Clanton · A Narwhal and Jelly Book #6
A vocabulary-rich graphic novel where an enthusiastic narwhal accidentally discovers he's an awesome teacher
The story
When Narwhal and Jelly follow a group of fish to the Aquatic Academy, they find themselves swept into a school day filled with creative lessons, a competitive scavenger hunt, and plenty of waffle-themed mathematics. Along the way, Narwhal leads activities and inspires his classmates without realizing he is teaching — until a wise professor recognizes his unique contributions.
Age verdict
Best for ages 5-8. Accessible to 4-year-olds as a read-aloud and still enjoyable for early elementary kids, but emotional simplicity limits appeal for older readers.
Our take
Entertainment-first graphic novel that doubles as a vocabulary powerhouse and reluctant-reader rescue. Kids and teachers find more value than parents seeking literary depth.
What stands out
Each audience's top 3 dimensions. Out of 30 scored per book.
Kids love
- Mental movie Exceptional
The Sand Warrior but below for visual richness — as a graphic novel, visual delivery is exceptional: full-color sequential art, expressive character reactions, visual humor on every page. Sits below because Clanton's style is clean/minimalist rather than painted/detailed; visual accessibility is stronger than visual immersion.
- Laugh-out-loud Strong
absurdist (pool party underwater), wordplay (O-FISH-AL, FINTASTIC), tongue-twisters (GIGGLESWICK), synonym-list rhythm (AMAZING! UNBELIEVABLE! MARVELOUS!). Sits at this level because humor density is constant and fresh, matching Babymouse's sustained freshness.
Parents love
- Reading gateway Exceptional
Something Wonky This Way Comes , verified with Babymouse Goes for the Gold — exceptional gateway power. Fully illustrated graphic novel, visual support on every page, 85% dialogue, short chapters (2-4 pages), constant humor, large font. Sits above because accessibility is combined with humor-density + synonym-vocabulary exposure; one of the most effective reluctant-reader rescues available.
- Vocabulary builder Strong
Comparable to Charlotte's Web , triangulated with A Tale Dark and Grimm — synonym accumulation exposes 50+ descriptive words (DELECTABLE, SCRUMPTIOUS, TOOTHSOME, PALATABLE, EXTRAORDINARY, SPECTACULAR, REMARKABLE) naturally through stacked-adjective technique. Charlotte's Web integrates vocabulary through eloquent prose; Narwhal uses synonym lists as humor + pedagogy. Sits at 8 because vocabulary exposure is strong but pedagogical (lists) rather than prose-integrated.
Teachers love
- Reluctant reader rescue Exceptional
Something Wonky This Way Comes , triangulated with Babymouse Goes for the Gold — T9 anchor emphasizes read-aloud chantability + performability (Mercy Watson) AND visual + text humor sustaining engagement (Babymouse). Narwhal delivers both: exceptional graphic-novel accessibility with full visual support every page PLUS constant humor that carries reluctant readers through effortlessly. Both anchors verify 9 because reluctant-reader rescue capability is verified across multiple dimensions (accessibility + joy + vocabulary + visual).
- Read-aloud power Strong
Comparable to A Tale Dark and Grimm , triangulated with Interrupting Chicken — synonym accumulation lists are naturally chantable (group participation on AMAZING/UNBELIEVABLE/MARVELOUS), puns are performable (O-FISH-AL, FINTASTIC), character voices are distinct. Sits below Grimm because graphic-novel dialogue lacks prose-level musicality and rhythmic control; below Interrupting Chicken because theatrical register is not present.
✓ Perfect for
- • Emerging readers ready for their first graphic novel
- • Reluctant readers who resist traditional chapter books
- • Kids who love silly humor with puns and wordplay
- • Children anxious about school who need a positive school story
- • Vocabulary building disguised as entertainment
Not ideal for
Readers seeking complex plots, emotional depth, or sustained narrative tension. Older kids (10+) may find the emotional stakes too light and the humor too gentle.
