A comedy-first art school adventure that sneaks in real feelings about family, friendship, and finding where you belong.
The story
After a family crisis forces a move to the city, Rafe Khatchadorian lands at Cathedral School of the Arts with a mission: complete 195 new experiences before his reapplication deadline. Along the way he navigates bullying artists, a complicated new friendship, and unexpected discoveries about his own family history.
Age verdict
Best for ages 9-12. The humor and illustrations work for advanced 8-year-olds, while the family themes give older readers something to chew on.

What stands out
Each audience's top 3 dimensions. Out of 30 scored per book.
Kids love
- First-chapter grab Strong
Comparable to Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute — Opens with Rafe's meta-aware "who'd have thought" hook establishing voice immediately, followed by diner fire inciting incident that cascades. Sits at anchor because both ground readers instantly in kid-scale stakes with strong voice, though Rafe's self-reference is more literary than Lunch Lady's visual grab.
- Middle momentum Strong
Off the Hook — 68 short chapters averaging 1000-1500 words with varied lengths (punchy 1K chapters alternate with imaginative sequences) create relentless forward pull. Sits at anchor because both use chapter structure to maintain momentum, though InvestiGators relies on set-pieces while Middle School uses voice variation and cliffhanger endings.
Parents love
- Reading gateway Exceptional
Comparable to Frog and Toad Together — Short chapters, immediate relatability (middle-school social dynamics), clear emotional stakes (father absence, friendship betrayal), and protagonist voice create natural entry points for family discussion. Sits at anchor because both prioritize accessibility and emotional clarity that invite parent-child conversation without requiring literary analysis.
- Creative spark Strong
Comparable to Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute — Rafe's prank designs, his elaborate fantasy sequences, and running jokes reward multiple readings as details and callback humor become clear. Sits at anchor because both embed creative inspiration in the story without explicitly inviting extension; readers enjoy discovering new details rather than being prompted to create.
Teachers love
- Reluctant reader rescue Strong
Hard Luck , slightly elevated to 8 — The Middle School series is a proven reluctant-reader rescue: humor removes academic anxiety, short chapters provide victory moments, relatable protagonist normalizes school struggle. Sits near anchor because both prioritize accessibility and voice over challenge; Middle School's comedy-first approach appeals to reluctant readers consistently.
- Read-aloud power Strong
Comparable to The Golem's Eye — Rafe's voice is highly performable with consistent sarcasm and asides that translate well to read-aloud. Chapter lengths and endings provide natural pause points for classroom sessions. Sits at anchor because both offer personality-driven voices that engage listeners; Middle School's humor is more conversational while Golem's Eye uses fantastical complexity.
✓ Perfect for

- • Kids interested in art or creative expression
- • Fans of Wimpy Kid and Big Nate looking for similar series
- • Middle schoolers dealing with school transitions or family changes
Not ideal for
Readers seeking deep literary prose or sustained emotional intensity — this is entertainment-first with emotional moments woven in, not the other way around.
