The story

Greg Heffley has the perfect summer planned: stay inside, play video games, and avoid all responsibility. His mother has a very different vision involving outdoor activities, family outings, and a summer photo album documenting it all. As Greg navigates embarrassing family excursions, tests his best friend Rowley's loyalty, and discovers that the adults in his life are more complicated than he assumed, he stumbles toward an unexpected realization about what actually makes a summer worthwhile.

Age verdict

Best for ages 8-11. Safe for 7-year-olds who enjoy the humor. Still entertaining for 12-13 year olds though they may be outgrowing the format.

Our take

Entertainment powerhouse — highest kid scores in voice, accessibility, and playground currency; strong teacher scores driven by reluctant reader utility; parent scores reflect the comedy-first design that prioritizes fun over growth.

You'll know it worked when…

Most kids will finish in 1-3 sittings. The diary format and consistent humor make it hard to find a natural stopping point, which is exactly the point.
