Because of Winn-Dixie
by Kate DiCamillo
A lonely girl and a stray dog build a community of misfits in small-town Florida
The story
Ten-year-old Opal moves to Naomi, Florida with her preacher father and adopts a scruffy dog from the Winn-Dixie grocery store. Through Winn-Dixie's irresistible personality, Opal begins meeting her neighbors: an elderly librarian with wonderful stories, a reclusive woman with a mysterious past, and a shy musician who charms animals with his guitar. As Opal's world expands, she starts grappling with questions about family, forgiveness, and what it means to belong.
Age verdict
Best for ages 9-11. Younger readers enjoy the dog and humor; the emotional themes about abandonment and forgiveness land most powerfully around age 10.
Our take
A Newbery Honor book that earns its strongest marks from adults who appreciate its literary craft and classroom utility; kids who connect with its emotional depth love it, but its quiet pacing and gentle humor score lower on the kid excitement metrics.
